Hi Ladies,

I started a new discussion a couple weeks ago explaining my senior thesis project where I am designing an object for previvors and survivors.  I am presenting the first round of prototypes with many more to come and would really appreciate some feedback.  Be brutally honest with me please, I only want to make my project stronger and more effective.  Bellow are four different design ideas.  And thank you all who participated by sharing your stories with me.

I love the dartboard concept or a boardgame concept. A stick-pin doll where you can stick pins into the ovaries or boobs! A HAHAHAHA doll that just Ha Ha's would be interesting. Embrace humor, why not? We are PISSED off, ANGRY, but what can ya do?

As well as pedigree jewelry? nothing new. Breast cancer jewelry everywhere. Who wants to wear depressing jewelry? or a dog tag screaming I am predisposed to cancer, etc?

Personally, if my kids wanted to write on me…..I'd kick their asses! LOL

good luck!

Hi Monica,

So I'll officially add my reactions…I know you know how I feel- since we did speak! I love The BRCA HUNTER! As I explained to you- us previvors are more scared of the cancer than prophylactically removing every body part associated with womanhood! There is nothing in the world that could have made having this gene better! I pray that I did not pass this down to my offspring.  As I said prior, your ideas are lovely, but for me the “dartboard” does it! As a previvor–for me anyway you had to get passed the “pissed, angry & inconvenienced” part. Then you have to adjust to reality—no boobs—then menopause. You realize all that is important is your family & love & support from friends. Shopping, things…just makes you feel better for the moment, but at the end of the day, you stilll have this “shitty” gene!

Lyn, your responses were so funny…I definitely realized how weird the scent might be.

Something funny about the dart board though – I did show this to the genetic counselor I spoke to at Sloan-Kettering and he HATED it.  She said it would trigger horrible feelings in her patients so its interesting that you and Tobey both like it.

As for the pedigree jewelry, I feel like a lot of the stuff out there is very “fund-raisery” and doesn't display personal information as much as an understanding of the cause.  And while my rendering was kind of cheesy too if I were to go further with jewelry I would want it to be extremely elegant.

I have been thinking about the pen and paper though, and I think it branched out to the skin writing because I was thinking of a more interesting way of doing it.  Do you think it is something you would actually use?

Really love the feedback though, thank you both so much!

Okay Monica…..

Just sitting down with a cuppa coffee & strawberry cheese danish. (I can think)!!!

Criteria for project success in my opinion…….

1. Keep it light & up as opposed to OMG & sad & depressing.

2. Maintain the HUMOR.

3. Mommy's typically protect, shield, diminish severity of blow. I don't want your project to be doom & gloom & projecting a poor outcome of conversation. Remember: it's a 50-50 outcome. Go for the POSITIVE!

sooooooo…with that in mind. I'm still favoring a game. Cards? or

remember that origami fortune teller game we played as children?

http://www.mathematische-basteleien.de/fortune_teller.htm

maybe even something like jeopardy….questions & answers!

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Something funny about the dart board though – I did show this to the genetic counselor I spoke to at Sloan-Kettering and he HATED it.  She said it would trigger horrible feelings in her patients so its interesting that you and Tobey both like it. I did like it. If you would like to talk to another genetic counselor, call Diana Moglia,  at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. She is LOVELY.

As for the pedigree jewelry, I feel like a lot of the stuff out there is very “fund-raisery” and doesn't display personal information as much as an understanding of the cause.  And while my rendering was kind of cheesy too if I were to go further with jewelry I would want it to be extremely elegant. Who knows, you may become a multi millionairess with this idea!!! I don't love it for this project though!

I have been thinking about the pen and paper though, and I think it branched out to the skin writing because I was thinking of a more interesting way of doing it.  Do you think it is something you would actually use? Wouldn't have been my style. No…..& I guess it also depends on the age that you are catering this project towards. My 3 children were all in their 20's when I told them. I just blurted it out, said you all need to get checked by the ages of 25-30. Please take care of it. I didn't make a big deal out of it. It wasn't an OMG convo. Families have ALL kinds of genetic predispositions. Heart disease, diabetes, cancers, etc. You just want them to be proactive. Just like Tobey & myself were,  prior to even knowing WE were BRCA positive. All we knew was that we had a mother aged 55 with breast cancer. We knew our entire adult lives how imperative it was to get checked. That's all you want to STRESS to family members. Having the BRCA gene isn't a death sentence, it's a wake up call.

Maybe even create a puzzle! I'm sticking with a game thought!

Really love the feedback though, thank you both so much!

In response to a private message telling me that it was a surprise to approach the theme of this project with humor!

I was surprised that this project theme should be so seriously depressing & alarming. Why would a mother talk to her SONS AND DAUGHTERS, & have them ASSUME the worst scenario? It seems as if, this project is catered to an outcome which would be 50% of the glass half empty! Perhaps WE are looking at that glass in 2 different manners. My glass IS & ALWAYS will be half full! Therefore, I would NEVER approach a conversation with anything OTHER than a positive or optimistic spin. Additionally, your project also seems to be biased to telling a daughter. I have to tell you, when I initially read your post I was SO put off by the exclusion of SONS in your statement. This CONVERSATION in my family included my 2 sons AND a daughter.

Our family God Bless LOVES to laugh. Life is hectic & serious enough without ADDING more stress to it. Wouldn't it be a better place if we all laughed a little more?
