Hi Friends,

I am two weeks out of having a prophylactic, bilateral mastectomy with expanders.  I am not feeling well at all, although my drs say I am healing fine.  My spirit is down.  I have a lot of pain.  I tried to wean myself off of the Vicoden last week, but I've had a tough couple of days, so I'm putting myself back on.

I've spoken to women who really felt ok by 1-2 weeks after surgery, but I wonder what “normal” is.  I am still very uncomfortable sitting in a car and driving was painful. Perhaps it is because I am 51 and those other women were younger.   Thanks for listening.

Hi Sharon,

Bless you on your courageous decision—you have just saved your life! If you live in NY your pain is because of this relentless rain we have been having!

Everyone heals differently…it takes 3 months to feel better, 6 months to feel well & one year to feel like nothing happened!

We are all here for you…check your email for the private message I left you.

Talk to you soon.Kiss

2 weeks is still very early. Although I seemed to my family to be OK, I remember that I too was concerned at the slow process of feeling good. Surprisingly pain was not an issue for me, more a weakness. True it is a slow recovery but each of us is an individual ( I was 50 when I had my BPM's) I was determined to be back to my old self, and slowly i did. At 4 weeks I was feeling great, and 5 was even better. I don't know where the time goes, but it does pass and you will be back to normal eventually!

Please keep in mind the surgery #2  is much easier and #3 is even more so.

We are here for you, as so many have been here for us.

Sharon, hang in there. It's WAY too soon after surgery to be strapping on a seat belt–I started driving at week 4, but held the chest strap AWAY from my poor sore chest with my left-hand thumb  . . .

But I'm at week 8 now, and better every day.  My cousin, who just went through the same thing, wasn't even allowed to sit UP for the first entire week, much less drive.

If you must be in a car, call a cab or a friend, or perhaps there's a postcancer support group in your town. Give yourself a few more weeks.

Getting well is a very big job, so don't feel like you're not doing something important for yourself when your body says, “PLEASE let me sleep.”  Patience and nurturing, along with some careful exercise movements, will have you back to feeling better.

I also recommend forgetting the old normal asap–easy for me to say, I'm 56 and forgetfulness IS the new normal–! Just reset your expectations to “postsurgery,” and everything will feel better day by day.

Good luck: keep posting! Let us know how you're feeling.

So sorry you are going through such a hard time. I never had what you are going through. I had a lumpectomy. Then lymph node dissection and they removed 18 nodes and 4 were positive. Try and keep positive, I know its hard when everyone keeps telling you that and you feel like no one knows what your going through, But I do understand and my thoughts and prayer are with you….

I had the tram flap procedure, so I can't really speak to the tissue expanders & pain. However, I remember having to go back to my Dr. & ask him for more pain killers. It is now 2 yrs post OP for me & sometimes I still need to take a pain killer on those “rain pain days”. I have spoken to my plastic surgeon about “rain pain” & it is a valid complaint. So…HANG IN THERE!
