Hi Friends, I am 4 weeks after my exchange surgery. Physically, I feel so much better. The expander experience really hurt. I am suffering from depression and I wish there was a support group on LI, NY I can attend. Apparently, there are no groups for a woman like me who had a prophylactic mastectomy. All the support groups are about living and dealing with cancer. The women may be brca, but they also had cancer. I need help living and dealing with my new normal. I do not regret my decision, but I am very, very sad a lot. I have called my dr and will investigate medication, but still….Force has a group, but they meet infrequently, perhaps 2-3 times a year.
One of my friends said that I might be experiencing something very much like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I think that is very possible.

Hi Sharon,
We Brca previvors are welcome at every breast cancer support group—but I feel your pain! We are different because we didn't have cancer! I can tell you from experience that each time I have met with breast cancer survivors it has ALWAYS been warm & cushy! They have been where we are—& far worse.
Please email me privately & hopefullly we can make arrangements for you to meet other previvors.

You are not alone. You are a strong and smart previvor. Toby and this website has helped me immensly. I go to bed early, so I dont do group meetings, but if you need me I am available by phone or email. Toby knows how to contact me, just ask her…. it really helps to talk.

I attend a support group every second & fourth Wednesday of every month at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. We have a very active & fun group. The regulars will tell you, it helps us breathe. We cry, we laugh, we share & we definitely support one another, both there & outside of the meetings. I am a survivor & I can tell you, that as a previvor, you are most welcome. There is not a lot of difference in our emotions & feelings. We are all sisters, women, ONE. Please find a meeting & attend. You will find that you are not alone & that thru the sisterhood, your depression & spirits will improve. Coping through understanding that your feelings are normal will come in time as you heal both spiritually & physically.
Wishing you all the best towards a speedy recovery!

Thank you so much for your speedy replies. The Islip group sounds great, but I live in Westbury, so I think that might be about an hour away. I'm a teacher and I go to bed early, so eve meetings are hard for me, but maybe over one of my school vacations, I can visit that group. I wish something like that could be created in Nassau. But it really helps to know you women are “out there” and I am thankful to be able speak to you. I'm also so thankful to Tobey for this web site.
