my question of the day: how many people find out that they are BRCA positive after they get a cancer diagnosis? then….do they have their families tested or choose vigilance?

As you know…….I received my cancer diagnosis…..felt compelled to tell my family. Found out I was BRCA positive & then so informed my family AGAIN, as to this new development It is up to each individual family member as to whether they wish to find out if they carry the gene or not. I would NEVER have been tested had I not been worn down by my health care professionals who INSISTED because I had children that it was IMPERATIVE to do so. I however, felt that I did not wish to look into that crystal ball. Any regrets? None. It was the right decision. At the time, it was just too overwhelming:)

Hi. I think it's important that if there is evidence to warrant getting tested, i.e. personal history or direct family history, you should get tested. With HIPAA laws now, no one can find out/discriminate against you because you have tested positive for the gene. My view is get tested, if you test positive then you will be able to get the preventative care you need; whether it is preventative surgery or just basic surviellance. Imagine how hard it would be to get an breast MRI approved every year (as what guidelines suggest) had your dr not been able to state definitively to the insurance company that you are at this significantly higher risk.
