We have a member who has a question about oophorectomy…

She is most concerned about going through surgical menopause:

“The symptoms that go along with it, shortened life expectancy, & the choice of hormone replacement therapy afterwards.”

PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH THE GROUP & IF YOU COULD LET US KNOW WHAT AGE GROUP YOU ARE IN—IT ALSO WOULD BE HELFUL.

20-30; 30-40, 40-50, 50-60 YEARS OLD?

Thanx so much….BE WELL~Laughing

Had oophorectomy at 40-50 years old. Easy decision—breast/ovarian cancer or menopause- I chose menopause. Menopause symptoms:hot flashes only. Shortened life expectancy? I figured my days were more numbered having the BRCA gene & being predisposed to breast/ovarian cancer. It was recommended that I NOT take HRT.

I had mine at age 45.  I had the same experience as “anonymous.”  It was not recommended that I go on HRT, either.  The only thing my dr recommended was black cohosh, an herb found in vitamin and health food stores.  I did not know of “shortened” life span.  It was not easy being “drop kicked” into menopause, but it is wonderful to never have a “period” again.

Thank you Sharon and “anonymous”!

I'm 38 and scheduled to have oophorectomy in March, but honestly I might still back out.  So, were hot flashes the only symptom?  Can you sleep at night?  Any changes with skin..appearance?  I know I sound kind of paranoid….I guess part of me is worried I will wake up the next day and feel “old”.  Is that crazy?  Like most of you..I have the BRCA gene and alot of family history of ovarian cancer.  Of course I don't want to die of ovarian cancer, but I also don't want to die of a heart attack (also runs in the family) and I've read that women that go through surgical menopause have a much greater risk of heart attack and stroke.

Sorry to be so longwinded…but as you know..this is a big decision..and one I can take back once I do it.

I think it would be a good idea to see a genetic counselor…does anyone have any suggestions for counselors in the northern VA/Washington DC area?

Robine…IT IS A MASSIVE DECISION!

You must speak to a physician that knows you- one you trust & can help you thru the decision making. I first called my gynecologist…then my breast surgeon. My breast surgeon was the leader. She sent me for BRCA testing & I spoke with a geneticist & a counselor. THEY DO NOT TELL YOU WHAT TO DO- they educate you. IT'S YOUR BODY—ULTIMATELY, YOUR DECISION.

Everyone reacts differently to menopause—you may have zero symptoms, one or two OR FULL BLOWN! YOU MUST BE PREPARED!

I am going to finish this privately with you thru email!

hugging you…..TOBEY

For me….mentalpause was the next best thing to ice cream. ZERO symptoms! I was 48 years old.

I sleep like a baby, no skin or hair problems! No dryness in other places either!!!

I'm not allowed herbal supplements as I am a breast cancer survivor, my oncologist said NO.

As far as being worried about heart attack or stroke…trust me if you hear the words CANCER you WILL have a stroke! LOL

No HRT, & as far as heart disease & dying……we ALL die sometime from something!

Had my Oopherectomy only a few months ago. Absolutely no problems whatsoever ! in n out of hosp within the day. Four weeks off work but no pain, just a little discomfort for maybe three days afterwards.

After nearly driving myself insane with the “shall I Shan't I ” questions, it dawned on me that an early menopause had to be easier than the emotional turmoil of Cancer risks. Since being thrown into early menopause ( i'm 39 ) I have the occasional hot flash , the odd bout of irritability  but I was far worse before !  No periods though which is great n absolutely no other problems at all since starting HRT last year.  Gotta say that right now it was def the right choice for me.
