Hi everyone. I had bilateral mastectomies done March of 2010. My implant surgery was in July 2010 and I'm still in a lot pain. After trying months of PT and neurotin meds, nothing seems to help. My plastic surgeon feels that removing the implants won't change any of my pain. He thinks the general surgeon may have severed several nerves when removing my breasts and now is sending me to pain management for intercostal nerve blocks. Has anyone out there had this procedure done? Did it help? Should I get a second opinion? I'm so tired of all this pain. I just want my life back…..

In this case, the words are MRI MRI MRI - second opinion from breast surgeon – neurological surgeon – back to the general surgeon for a referral. In spite of the urgency to get your life back, take time to go to a team of different specialists who can read your MRI looks at other tests maybe and give you more input.

DIZZ- you have a private message waiting for you in your email, but one of our members emailed me privately, she would like to “speak” with you, so check your email & give her a call. If you are uncomfortable with this, please contact me privately.
“Can you have this woman call me?? It sounds like her experience is EXACTLY like mine. I have never encountered anyone having these same problems!! I’m in California…”

I belong to a breast cancer group & yes, this is not as uncommon as you may think. Some women have sought help through physical therapy & have reported successful results.
Good Luck!

I had a bilateral mastectomy done Dec 17, 2010. Recovery and reconstruction was great until March of 2011. Pain has been non stop since then, just in one area, just on one side. I have gone through several rounds of painful pain management injections, acupuncture, botox injections, steroid injections (and yes the expandable saline filled implant got ruptured and has a slow leak). I tried physical therapy and hands on massage and manipulation. I had surgery in May of 2011 to see if there was scar tissue or infection (negative on both). Right now the implant is completely deflated (i have a prosthesis) hoping to give the area time to settle down and heal. I was scheduled to have my exchange surgery on Jan 19 (to exchange the saline implants for permanent silicone one)–that is on hold indefinitely. I am going to go see another plastic surgeon for a second opinion at a big teaching hospital in NYC. I have COMPLETE faith and trust in my doctors, but I need a second set of eyes and another prospective (my plastic surgeon agrees with this course of action). NOTHING is helping and I am completely frustrated, angry and running out of patience. My pain dr and plastic surgeon both agree that this is caused by a nerve ending and possibly the next surgery will kill the one(s) that is causing all the trouble. Had an EMG done by another pain dr (not the one I am using) and it was negative. Current pain dr does not feel that an MRI will help.

Just an update. I tried the intercostal nerve blocks (4) and had no success. I was left with two options, surgical implantation of a stimulous device or radiofrequency ablation. I'm schedule to have the ablation in two weeks. Just wondering if anyone has had this done and did they have any success with this???? I'm really scared and nervous about it but have been in pain for 2 years now and have had enough…… dizz

from Sharon:
I am about two and a half years our of my surgeries; bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I have “rain pain” too! It occurred to me, just like people have back or knee pain when the weather changes, I have discomfort at that time as well.
I also have scar tissue issues. My doctor says she wants to go back in, scrape out the scar tissue and perhaps give me another implant because I feel that the gummy bears are too hard, but I'm not ready to redo the process, although it will be much less of a recooperative period. Maybe in another year or so. Or maybe I'll wait until the implants need to be redone, in less then 8 years now.
