Anybody taking Arimidex?  For how long?  Any side effects? If so, what do you do about them? I'm starting in for my 5-year stint TODAY. Thanks for the info!

Dear Tobey,

I started taking Arimidex for 2.5 months last September after a second recurrence of breast cancer.

I started developing severe leg pain, especially at night. I also starting getting night sweats and feeling exhausted.

It is interesting that during my first bout with breast cancer, I took Tamoxifen for 4.0 years with little trouble.

I stopped the Arimidex and feel much better.

There is another drug called Zometa that is purported to be a good substitute. Note: Zometa was originally developed for bone cancer. I am not endorsing the drug, but I myself am looking into it as a substitute for Arimidex. I am attaching some literature on this drug.

What is also interesting to note about my reaction to Arimidex, is that AFTER STOPPING IT, I didn't want to take another drug ! It's been many months since then and I think I am finally (FINALLY) getting up the courage to try another… It's a process. I think my experience with breast cancer prevention drugs is that individuals differ on their experience with specific drugs–What works for one person in terms of the side effects issue may not work for another. I know this sounds like common sense, but when you are in this state of not wanting your cancer to come back, you feel like the drug MUST work or else… (you can fill in the blank).

After many months, I am now ready to try another drug… I decided to give Zometa– a try. My oncologist didn't know about the drug, but is looking into it. It's important to remember that we can push the boundaries of knowledge building as well as the medical establishment. It is my firm belief that the medical establishment needs to carefully listen to women's lived experiences– and take WOMEN'S WORDS seriously. WOMEN'S knowledge  MUST ALSO FIGURE INTO  possible BREAST CANCER Treatment protocols. WOMEN have an important role to play in this KNOWLEDGE process.

The bottom line for me in this process of drug trials is THAT I  have come to ultimately trust my body to tell me what is not working for me. I need to remember to listen to me~

That I think has been the gift of taking Arimidex.

Best wishes to all,

Note on Zometa:  Page title: Bone-building drug Zometa fights breast cancer spread in younger women, may lead to wider use

Summary:  It may well change practice,” said Dr. Zometa may help them, too, but it hasn't been tested yet in that age group. The study was led by Dr. The approval was based on measurements like those in this study — cancer progression, rather than overall survival.

First I want to congratulate you on finishing your treatments & wish you only the best of health in the future.

I have been on Arimidex for the past 2 years & I hate it! However, when weighing the pros & cons, I feel it is worth a few side effects. The ones that affect me the most are: power surges (hot flashes), arthritis & joint (knee) pain, & weight gain.

I am an avid walker, treadmill & bike rider. I keep myself active. I eat a healthy diet, & for the most part feel better. Before I started getting in the groove of exercise & healthy eating, I was packing on the pounds. This works for me.

Good Luck!

another one of our lurkers sent a private message to post!

Hi Tobey!!

As you know i started taking arimidex in April 2008 & will be taking it for 5 years. many women in my support group are on it now & some are done taking it. Some complain of muscle ache. If you read any info. on arimidex “bone loss” is a common problem. You must take 1200-1500 mg of calcium daily , along with vitamin d3. Quantity for d3?? I would do some research. Personally, I take 2,000 mg daily. Some might think that is too much.  Check the calcium pills because there is usually some d3 in there. ALSO, very important: you must get a bone density test every year. Most insurance only allows for once every two years but with an rx from your dr. you are entitled to one every year because you're on the arimidex. And, weight bearing exercise (i.e.:dumbells) is very helpful.  Speak to you soon.

Andrea
