BRCA PREVIVORS AND SURVIVORS—-check this out!

posted on February 6, 2011 at 3:23 pm

I just finished reading a book from one of our BRCA previvors and survivors members and I wanted to recommend it to anyone facing the preemptive decision of having a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy and or oophorectomy.

The book is: BEYOND THE PINK MOON by Nicki Boscia Durlester.  You can follow our link for all information. If you would like an autographed copy of the book, you can e-mail her directly at: nicki@beyondthepinkmoon.comShipping will also be free.

Please order her book, as it is a very inspiring account and honest look at the issues we face. Nicki, has also offered to give back to our previvor and survivor community, by donating 25% of the books sales if you mention previvorsandsurvivors.com.

http://previvorsandsurvivors.com/forum/other-brca-previvor-blogs/beyond-the-pink-moon-a-memoir-of-legacy-loss-and-survival/page-1/

It is her personal memoir of legacy, loss and survival.  I found the story to be unbelievably riveting. No matter how many stories I hear from our members, it always moves me to hear someone’s journey and what brought them to our site. We, who are diagnosed positive with the BRCA gene mutation, all have the same fears for ourselves and our families, and somehow having this sisterhood here, brings us all together.

As always,

Be well you all…..

BLAST THIS WWP2 Gene PLEASE

posted on January 25, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Bloomberg news has reported that scientists have identified a “rogue gene” ( WWP2)

Attacking the gene in the future will make a protein in our body stronger & will enable our bodies to stop the cancer from spreading.

Hopefully medicine in the future can provide us with drugs to target this WWP2 gene.

I HAVE A QUESTION…

posted on January 4, 2011 at 9:26 pm

I was just speaking with a fellow breast cancer advocate & we got involved in a big discussion. Basically, cancer is a big big business to MANY people, so the big question that we have is HOW WILL WE EVER GET OUR CURE WHEN CANCER IS SUCH A BIG BUSINESS?

Anyone have an answer for us?

Pancreatic Cancer & the BRCA gene

The BRCA Connection-Are Jews more vulnerable to pancreatic cancer?

Written by: Fredda Sacharow from the jewishexponent.com  follow this link for the entire article: http://www.jewishexponent.com/article/22092/

According to the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders, people who test positive for the BRCA2 gene are also at a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

Also noteworthy was the information that Ashkenazic (Eastern European Jewish Descent) families who have 2 first degree relatives who have had pancreatic cancer were also at a higher risk of having the BRCA2 mutation.

It is being recommended that if you are Askenazic & have a family history of OVARIAN, BREAST or PANCREATIC CANCER you get genetic testing.

Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose early. Symptoms could include: backaches, weight loss, appetite loss, jaundice or yellowing of skin & nausea, & stool changes. If you have symptoms–see your doctor

Please follow this link for this very important information:  http://www.newsday.com/news/postmenopause-hormone-pills-linked-to-kidney-stones-1.2351965?p=

At risk alarms are ringing yet again for post menopausal women taking “hormone pills, Pempro, pills containing estrogen plus progestin, or Premarin, estrogen-only pills.” These alarms are warning these women they are at risk for developing kidney stones.

As always discuss the risk vs. benefit with your physician. We already know that hormone replacement medication has been linked with heart attacks, breast cancer & strokes.  It is further recommended that if you must take these medications take them for as short a period of time as possible to limit your health risks.

 Be well you all…
