Joe Genova and Tony Biaca co-owners of the Green Olive Bistro are proud to be hosting the “Pizza and Pasta Event “ to benefit previvorsandsurvivors.com on September 18th, 2011 . Last winter both gentlemen lost loved ones to cancer. Joe lost his dad to multiplemyoloma and Tony lost his beloved wife to breast cancer. She carried the BRCA1 gene. Their commitment to help organizations dedicated to conquering this disease is heartfelt.
They have taken their combined experiences as owners of other facilities and created this wonderful new restaurant. The history of the name is very interesting.
For the people of the ancient world living along the Mediterranean Sea, the olive was life. That’s how vital it was to their society, culture, and economy.
Evidence shows that by as early as 3,500 B.C. they had learned the secret to curing the olive and transforming it from an inedible fruit (when picked off the vine) into a much sought-after delicacy. The olive’s other uses were exploited to their fullest by the Romans. By about 600 B.C. they had mastered olive cultivation and had an extensive and profitable land and sea trade just for olive oil. The liquid gold was used not only as a cooking product but also as a fuel, ointment, and cosmetic base. And the olive’s fragrant wood was held in equally high esteem.
Taking it’s name from this great history, The Green Olive Bistro uses fresh ingredients of the Mediterranean to present traditionally Italian favorites in an exciting new way for your enjoyment. Bloomberg news has reported that scientists have identified a “rogue gene” ( WWP2)
Attacking the gene in the future will make a protein in our body stronger & will enable our bodies to stop the cancer from spreading.
Hopefully medicine in the future can provide us with drugs to target this WWP2 gene.

I was just speaking with a fellow breast cancer advocate & we got involved in a big discussion. Basically, cancer is a big big business to MANY people, so the big question that we have is HOW WILL WE EVER GET OUR CURE WHEN CANCER IS SUCH A BIG BUSINESS?
Anyone have an answer for us?

The BRCA Connection-Are Jews more vulnerable to pancreatic cancer?

According to the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders, people who test positive for the BRCA2 gene are also at a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
Also noteworthy was the information that Ashkenazic (Eastern European Jewish Descent) families who have 2 first degree relatives who have had pancreatic cancer were also at a higher risk of having the BRCA2 mutation.
It is being recommended that if you are Askenazic & have a family history of OVARIAN, BREAST or PANCREATIC CANCER you get genetic testing.
Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose early. Symptoms could include: backaches, weight loss, appetite loss, jaundice or yellowing of skin & nausea, & stool changes. If you have symptoms–see your doctor

At risk alarms are ringing yet again for post menopausal women taking “hormone pills, Pempro, pills containing estrogen plus progestin, or Premarin, estrogen-only pills.” These alarms are warning these women they are at risk for developing kidney stones.
As always discuss the risk vs. benefit with your physician. We already know that hormone replacement medication has been linked with heart attacks, breast cancer & strokes. It is further recommended that if you must take these medications take them for as short a period of time as possible to limit your health risks.
